Home Tour: Reimagining a Spanish Revival Home

Updated: Jan 3, 2023

Just a 20-minute drive from the center of downtown Los Angeles, this 1931 built home is full of historic character. Maverick Design + Wedgewood Homes set out to revive the meticulous architectural detail throughout the property and reignite its charm and elegance for today's buyers.

The home's exterior offered stunning features and curb appeal. We revitalized the house with a bright paint scheme, updated fixtures, and other accents. Taking a more sustainable approach to the landscaping, we opted to refresh the grounds with beautiful and functional xeriscape at the front, side, and backyards, using plants native to California that require very little water and maintenance. The entry courtyard was also enhanced to provide an urban outdoor retreat with drought-tolerant foliage.

Inside, the home emulates romanticism and nostalgia, boasting original vaulted ceilings, accent wood beams, and a beautiful feature fireplace. Our goal was to embrace and emphasize the unique qualities of this Spanish revival while enhancing the home's condition. Off the living room, a stunning wood-paneled sunroom was preserved and enlivened by a richly patterned floor tile.

One of our most significant projects was updating the kitchen and dining spaces to add value and improve the home for future buyers. The kitchen went from dated appliances and oak cabinets damaged from years of wear to a modern and airy open concept. Custom, dual-finish millwork was added, featuring a statement pantry and centerpiece walnut island with soapstone countertops. Considering homeowners' growing need for multiple work-from-home solutions, Maverick designed a modern installment of a touch-down computer station with a well-crafted desk nook built within the kitchen cabinetry. This was one of our favorite features of the home!

Maverick Design + Wedgewood Homes also updated the stunning primary bedroom with modern amenities featuring a luxurious dual closet and en-suite bathroom. The team retained a classic touch by installing French doors overlooking the new sundeck and private backyard.

Though Spanish revival homes indeed evoke a sense of history, this house is a perfect example of how modern and traditional elements can work together seamlessly in a thoughtful reimagination. The Maverick Design + Wedgewood Homes team was thrilled to provide the right touch of elevated home design combined with skillful restoration to revitalize this gorgeous home.
