Maverick Design + Wedgewood Homes saw enormous potential in this striking Palos Verdes midcentury home. We envisioned an elevated transformation that would compliment the surrounding well-established, traditional neighborhood. We set out to design this home for the next generation of buyers and push the finishes in a direction to match its midcentury modern architecture.
While reimagining this home, we brightened the curb appeal with a modern paint scheme highlighting its striking architectural lines and integrating the existing terracotta steps. Keeping our sustainable focus in mind, a drought tolerant xeriscape landscape design was installed in the front yard, setting our future buyer up for lower maintenance, water savings, and a beautiful appeal for years to come. We enhanced the existing patio, brick firepit, and outdoor spaces in the backyard. A new horizontal privacy fence wrapped the backyard and served as a new background for the home's central courtyard.
Inside the home, the floorplan wrapped around the same central courtyard giving it strong potential for indoor and outdoor living. However, the current layout was compartmentalized, leaving the entertainment and living spaces feeling disconnected. To improve the flow and connection, we opened the previously walled-off kitchen to create a light-filled great room connected to the courtyard. New sliders were added to both the great room and front living spaces to enhance the flow to the outdoor living spaces.
Throughout the home, we introduced an elevated palette of organic neutrals punctuated by contrasting accents. Our goal was to enliven the house's existing character through strategic design elements, including designer fixtures, finishes, and custom architectural details. The kitchen became a primary focal point featuring a custom range hood, dual-tone cabinets, and handcrafted Zellige tile backsplash. New arched openings were added on either side of the great room, creating a welcome transition to the adjacent spaces.
The light-filled primary suite opens to a beautiful ensuite bathroom with tile wainscot, designer dual vanity, and feature lighting. The hall bath was also updated to feature a tonal, terrazzo look tile, a floating vanity, and midcentury-inspired lighting. At the front of the home, we played up a tiny powder room with bold paint, sophisticated patterned tile, and an oversized mirror. A custom staging set was developed specifically for the home, including a mix of vintage and modern pieces to add character and bring this home's unique indoor and outdoor spaces to life. Maverick Design + Wedgewood Homes are pleased to share the result of this incredible transformation!
